Meet Bruce Levitt, Professor in the Department of Meet Bruce Levitt, Professor in the Department of Performing and Media Arts and a longtime leader in using theatre to confront mass incarceration.

Levitt received the inaugural Engaged Scholar Prize in 2016 for his transformative work with the Phoenix Players Theatre Group (PPTG) at Auburn Correctional Facility — a program where incarcerated men use theatre as a tool for healing, reflection, and re-entry preparation.

His ongoing projects — including courses such as Prison Theatre and the Possibilities of Transformation, Entry-Re-Entry, and Cages and Creativity: The Arts in Incarceration, as well as
joint projects with Civic Ensemble, and the Cornell Prison Education Program — offer Cornell students powerful opportunities to collaborate with currently and formerly incarcerated individuals. These courses and partnerships explore trauma, justice, and recovery through storytelling and performance, placing students at the intersection of art and social change.

Levitt’s work challenges conventional boundaries between classroom and community — creating space for deep listening, mutual transformation, and long-term impact. For more information on Levitt’s work see the Phoenix Players’ website: https://phoenixplayersatauburn.com/

Meet Farzan Hussainzada '25, the 2025 recipient of Meet Farzan Hussainzada '25, the 2025 recipient of the Class of 1964 John F. Kennedy Memorial Award!

Presented by award committee member and Cornell alum Jared Genser ’95, this $15,000 fellowship honors a graduating senior pursuing a career in public service — continuing President Kennedy’s legacy of youth leadership, civic commitment, and service for the public good.

Farzan, who arrived at Cornell just days before the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, found his purpose in immigration advocacy. From reuniting families as an intern at the American Immigration Lawyers Association to supporting Afghan refugees through Project ANAR, Farzan has dedicated his work to building bridges for those navigating the U.S. immigration system. On campus, he co-founded the Organization for Afghan Students and continues to uplift international student voices.

Meet Alexandra Dufresne, Professor of the Practice Meet Alexandra Dufresne, Professor of the Practice at the Brooks School of Public Policy and Director of the State Policy Advocacy Clinic.

As a Engaged Faculty Fellow, Dufresne is transforming how students learn public policy — not just in the classroom, but alongside communities and lawmakers across New York State.

Through the State Policy Advocacy Clinic, she leads undergraduate and master’s students in developing and advancing data-driven policies that support children, immigrants, rural communities, low-income populations, and others historically excluded from decision-making. From legislative research to direct advocacy, the clinic puts students on the front lines of systems change.

Dufresne received the Community-Engaged Practice & Innovation Award for her visionary approach to policy education — one that centers human rights, real-world collaboration, and student leadership.

#ThrowbackThursday to 2013 📸 — the opening of #ThrowbackThursday to 2013 📸 — the opening of Cornell’s Engaged Learning & Research Center, a space that launched a new era of community-engaged learning. Pictured in the first slide (at right) is Dr. Richard Kiely, then-director, whose vision helped lay the groundwork for what would become Engaged Cornell and eventually today’s Einhorn Center for Community Engagement.

Back then, it was about possibility. In 2025, it’s about impact. 🌍

With a mission rooted in collaboration, reflection, and justice, the Center now supports thousands of students, faculty, and community partners working together across disciplines and borders.

What started as an idea has grown into a university-wide movement.

Here’s to the past that brought us here—and the future we continue to build.
