Impact and Reach

Maribel Garcia ’95 lived with creativity, genero Maribel Garcia ’95 lived with creativity, generosity, and a deep commitment to community. After Maribel’s life was tragically cut short in 1997, her classmates and friends created the Maribel Garcia Community Spirit Award to honor the way she lived. For nearly two decades, her legacy has continued through Cornell students whose work reflects compassion, imagination, and service. Past awardees have empowered underserved youth through cooking programs, published literary journals from Auburn State Prison, expanded access to mental health care during COVID, and led conservation teams for girls in the Central African Republic.

Maribel’s story lives on through students who believe community engagement can be creative, bold, and deeply human.

Are you, or do you know, a student whose work embodies the spirit Maribel carried with her? Nominations, including self-nominations, for the Maribel Garcia Community Spirit Award are open now and due February 9, 2026. Click the link in our bio to nominate or learn more.

Meet Samhita Korukonda ’27 💡 Inspired by her Meet Samhita Korukonda ’27 💡

Inspired by her grandfather’s struggles navigating the U.S. healthcare system as an immigrant, Samhita found her passion in addressing health disparities. A Human Biology, Health, and Society major in @cornellhumec, she has seen firsthand how preventable chronic conditions disproportionately affect low income and unhoused communities.

Samhita created CommuniCare, a machine learning-based app that connects underserved individuals to free and low cost healthcare resources. By turning overwhelming information into actionable steps, CommuniCare helps users access support groups, workshops, and wellness programs tailored to their needs.

With support from the Robinson-Appel Humanitarian Award, Samhita is launching CommuniCare’s pilot in Ithaca, expanding outreach in shelters, community centers, and libraries, and working toward more equitable access to care.

Have a community engaged project you are ready to take further? Applications for the Robinson-Appel Humanitarian Awards are open. Click the link in our bio to apply by February 9, 2026.

Through Cornell’s Community Work-Study Program ( Through Cornell’s Community Work-Study Program (CWSP), Prisoner Express connects incarcerated individuals with educational resources, creative outlets and reading materials that are often unavailable behind bars. Based at the Durland Alternatives Library, the volunteer powered initiative supports thousands of participants nationwide by fostering connection, reflection and access to learning.

Each week, letters arrive from people in prisons across the country, messages that reflect the power of being seen, heard and supported. CWSP students help sustain this work by managing correspondence, supporting program operations and contributing to educational projects that encourage personal growth and intellectual engagement.

During spring 2025, Tracy Chen ’25 supported the program through CWSP, helping ensure correspondence reached the appropriate recipients and contributing to a structured project designed to encourage reflection and learning. “If my work has made somebody’s day in prison better, then it has all been worth it,” she shared.

Through CWSP, students play a vital role in sustaining community partnerships that extend far beyond campus and center dignity, care and access to education.

When Pilar Garcia ’27 joined Ithaca Murals throu When Pilar Garcia ’27 joined Ithaca Murals through the Community Work-Study Program, she expected to paint. What she didn’t expect was how deeply she’d grow, not just as an artist, but as a community member shaping the stories of Ithaca’s neighborhoods.

“It took six months before I painted my first mural,” Pilar shared. “But once I showed initiative, I was given the chance to lead — and that changed everything.” From learning how to transport supplies to understanding the cultural meaning behind each piece, Pilar became a core part of the team bringing large-scale public art to life across the city.

Her work showed her how murals can spark conversations about environmental justice, cultural identity and belonging. “Public art gives a voice to the community in a way architecture sometimes overlooks,” she said. “I want my future work to be expressive and culturally rich.”

For Ithaca Murals, student collaborators like Pilar are transformative. “They bring a young energy… they’re connected to what’s current,” said her supervisor, Caleb Thomas. “CWSP allows our team to grow and gives students real-world experience doing good work in the community.”

At the Ithaca Fire Department, CWSP student Jessie At the Ithaca Fire Department, CWSP student Jessie Sutton ’25 stepped into a project that would change the department for years to come. Tasked with transforming decades of incident logs, fire reports, EMS documentation and photos, Jessie created a digital system that is now searchable, secure and efficient for a team that answers more than 5,200 calls every year.

“What Jessie did really increases our efficiency,” said now retired Fire Chief Rob Covert ’89. “Anytime that members of the community and Cornell students have a chance to interact, it helps break through barriers of stereotypes, fostering more understanding and empathy.”

CWSP placements aren’t just jobs, they’re opportunities for students to lead, collaborate and leave a real mark on the community. Jessie’s work shows what can happen when students bring their skills into spaces built on public service.
