Emphasizing “Practice” in Epidemiology in Practice

Corinna Noel teaches Epidemiology in Practice, an intensive three-week summer course within Cornell’s Master of Public Health Program. The applied course introduces students to the fundamental principles and methods used in epidemiology research and practice, using a combination of lectures, classroom discussion and project-based work.

As a Faculty Fellow in Engaged Learning, Noel is exploring ways to reemphasize “practice” in “Epidemiology in Practice” through a community-engaged learning approach that is appropriate for an intensive, short-term course format.

“I believe that students are most engaged and motivated when they can see how the theories and content applies to real life, and are able to make a real difference. Through the objectives proposed in this fellowship, students will gain a better understanding of how foundational epidemiological concepts are applied in real life, and also develop analytical and critical thinking skills that will benefit them in their future careers.” —Corinna Noel
