Engaged scholarship can help avoid extractive, top-down research by involving communities in the formulation and development of research projects, including them in data collection efforts, and by ensuring they see the benefits of research. But while prioritizing engaged research may help build trust, engaging in participatory research is not without risks for both scholars and the communities with whom they engage. This project identifies risks faced by scholars and communities that participate in engaged scholarship, identify best practices and provide recommendations to ensure safe and successful engaged scholarship.
