Katrina L. Nousek is teaching a spring course on “Trash Talk: Garbage and Beauty” that examines how individual and social identities are constructed via consumption practices. By analyzing judgements about excess, abject waste and beauty, the course explores how selves are constituted through what is considered disposable. We then turn to alternative ways of interacting with environments, others, and things (e.g. reuse, repair, regeneration). The community-engaged portion will invite guest speakers and volunteer engagement to explore these ideas beyond the classroom, and result in a public humanities presentation tracing hidden histories and new uses of discarded goods.
