Supporting the Development of Community-Engaged Language Curricula
This project aims to embed community-engaged learning (CEL) more deeply into the curriculum of language courses at Cornell. It builds on existing efforts such as the Language Resource Center’s Conversation Hours and World Languages Day, which already serve as entry points for CEL. By identifying models of effective practice, convening a diverse group of faculty, community partners and students, and providing structural support through workshops and grants, the project aims to create a replicable framework for community-engaged language learning.
Importantly, this initiative also builds institutional capacity: By training and incentivizing faculty to design CEL-infused syllabi, we create a sustainable model that can extend across language departments and even colleges. Showcasing CEL via the LRC’s media channels and faculty spotlight series further validates and disseminates these efforts. The goal of this project is to align language learning with community connection, institutional reflection and transformative student experience.
