2018-19 Faculty Fellow in Engaged Learning

Food banks and related nonprofits help address the hunger experienced by 40 million Americans living in food-insecure households, but many nonprofits have limited access to business expertise that can strengthen their programs and boost fundraising. Heather Kolakowski’s service-learning course frames food insecurity as a social injustice and teaches students about the mechanics of nonprofit management. Through case studies, community service, and organizing and running a fundraising event in collaboration with the Fresh Snacks Program of the Youth Farm Project and Ravinder Kingra, lecturer in the Hotel School, students work directly with populations impacted by food insecurity and put their skills in marketing and outreach into practice.
