Engaging Undergraduates and BIPOC Youth to Study Rapid Change in the Critical Zone

Kade Keranen’s research focuses on shallow geophysics, including studies of the critical zone and the water and soil characteristics within that. Keranen is beginning to work with the local community in doing so, because geological processes and properties in this zone have high societal impact. Keranen works closely with undergraduates through active-learning courses and on research projects, and has also been mentoring and tutoring local high school students.

“I want to ensure that my work with the community is community-centered and always remains so, and that community questions are what are prioritized in the research and what the publications address.” —Kade Keranen
