Disability Studies
Kathleen Long is reworking the syllabus for the course, Disability Studies: A Brief History, so that community-engaged learning becomes an integral part of the course. The first step: working with faculty in the ILR School who teach disability studies classes and staff in the Office of Engagement Initiatives to identify potential community partners. From there, Long will build relationships with these partners and shape the course in such a way that addresses their needs and interests.
Because the course focuses in large part on discourses of ableism that inform attitudes towards people with disabilities, the community-engaged learning courses component will help students learn to give support and voice to people with disabilities, rather than speaking for them.
