In “Social Justice through Creative Writing,” students in Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 2090) explore contemporary global issues such as mass tourism, exploitation in the garment industry, job-market precarity and the defense of human rights. After discussing these topics, they write a creative piece that reflects the issues that affect them personally or that they find most compelling. Students then read one another’s short stories and offer peer feedback. Building on this work, I plan to transform a selection of these stories into short graphic narratives that can be donated to local schools, expanding the project’s reach and giving younger students access to socially engaged storytelling.
