As a Faculty Fellow in Engaged Learning, Yang is exploring the development of two complementary initiatives to expand access to high-quality STEM education in partnership with the Cornell Prison Education Program (CPEP). The first is an online data science course for individuals reentering society, offering foundational skills in Python programming, statistics, data visualization and machine learning through real-world, project-based activities such as budgeting and job searching. The course aims to increase digital literacy, support workforce reintegration and provide a scalable model for reentry education. The second is an in-person, eight-week workshop for incarcerated students at a medium-security facility, building on CPEP’s Python workshop and teaching neural networks, data engineering and statistical analysis using offline tools to overcome technological constraints. Both projects emphasize accessibility, hands-on learning and measurable outcomes to broaden participation in STEM fields and empower learners through education.
