As the pandemic subsides, it leaves behind millions of unemployed, underemployed and discouraged workers. These workers face numerous barriers to getting help. Overloaded systems, onerous identity verification procedures, confusing forms, intimidating appeals processes, and inadequate accommodations for non-native English speakers, are just a few.
The ILR Ithaca Co-Lab and Legal Assistance of Western New York work together to break down these barriers. Building on a unique, interdisciplinary course about unemployment, students work with attorneys to create materials, provide advice and interact with clients. With this 2021-22 Advancement Grant, the team is expanding the scale of the program.
