Peace Building in Conflict Regions

Long-term conflicts within Israel and the Palestinian Territories and in Sub-Saharan Africa exemplify not only the complex roots and current realities of long-term conflict, but they also illustrate how transborder collaboration, grassroots peace-building efforts, and science education and diplomacy can become crucial tools for reconciliation and development. In a new course taught simultaneously at Cornell and Eben-Ezer University in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), students study the dynamics of conflict and peace in consultation with policymakers and local stakeholders in the U.S., the DRC, and in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. On a planned spring break field trip to the DRC, students partner with community organizations on projects that will enhance local capacity for educational and agricultural development programs.
