Today’s scientists and engineers must be able to share complex STEM topics with the public, but students in these fields do not have many opportunities to develop strong communication skills. In spring 2018, this project created ENGRG 3360, an engineering communication course that is now becoming the first university-based PBS NewsHour STEM Student Reporting Lab, in collaboration with local NPR/PBS affiliate, WSKG. Student-created video content will be incorporated into lesson plans by local teachers for inclusion in PBS Learning Media, a nationally recognized digital education resource. Another aspect of this project centers on a partnership with the University of Texas at Austin to create a materials science module for their nationally distributed Engineer Your World curriculum for high school students.
