This grant supports the development of a new public history minor. Through community-engaged learning courses that are part of the minor, students will learn how to recognize and analyze the historical narratives they encounter every day, in public spaces, institutions and popular culture. They will also learn how to produce new histories with an ethical commitment to collaborating with the communities whose stories they seek to preserve and how to think more deeply about the stakes of historical knowledge and representation, particularly for marginalized communities.
Over the next two years, the project team will develop new core courses and modify existing courses to build a flexible curriculum for students interested in pursuing careers in public history and community development.
