The Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) program’s Engaged Learning course provides students with an opportunity to apply their STEM skills to a local or international service project. Engineering faculty with expertise in biofuels, small-scale solar technologies and human-powered energy systems give the student-led interdisciplinary teams the technical foundation to tackle research or design challenges, such as expanding biofuel efforts and helping a wastewater plant become energy neutral. Students often become enmeshed in the team fabric and remain involved for the duration of their time as undergraduates. They even rise to leadership positions within the ESW program and train upcoming leaders. This model is itself a prime example of sustainability in action, nurturing students’ teamwork skills so together they can develop solutions to real-world problems.
