Weaving the Personal, Political and Historical

This project is raising awareness and building partnerships between Cornell, Ithaca and New York City-based entities around the themes of migration, conflict and the representation of personal and political narratives. In recognition of the Ithaca City of Asylum’s 20th anniversary and the Center for Transformative Action’s 50th, the project team is inviting cartoonists Thi Bui and Pedro X. Molina to the Ithaca campus for fall 2021 events.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members participating in these events will learn of the personal stories and political threats that lead people to leave their homes, their experiences as migrants, and the telling of these narratives through graphic art. Molina and Bui’s experiences and craft will be front and center, but participants will also learn of the diverse ways ordinary people take action through civic engagement, intercultural exchange and ethical practice.
