/ Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Kid's Discover the Trail
During the month of May, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology welcomes over 800 fifth-grade students from across Tompkins County. Volunteers lead students on a biodiversity walk in the morning, followed by a post-lunch rotation of stations focused on bioacoustics and bird identification.
What is required of KDT volunteers?
- Volunteers must be 18 years or older, be available to attend the trainings, and lead a minimum of 4 programs. Programs run from 9am – 1:15pm during the month of May.
- Volunteers should have experience working with youth and an interest in birds, plants, and natural history. You don’t need to be an expert! They provide thorough training.
Volunteer Schedule:
- March: Sign volunteer forms, undergo a background check (for working with minors), take two short online courses.
- April: Attend volunteer training and sign up for program dates.
- New volunteers should plan to attend two half-day trainings.
- All volunteers should plan on attending a final practice walk in late April.
