Youth who have been through the juvenile justice system face many barriers when they return to their communities, including fractured social networks and a distrust of authority and legal structures. Academic and mentorship opportunities can help break down these barriers. Pro Se: Empowering Systems-Involved Youth through Speech and Debate is a free training certificate program that aims to offer both.
The program will offer developmentally-appropriate online curricula, taught by Cornell students recruited yearly from the Speech and Debate and Undergraduate Mock Trial programs and related courses. Upon completion, youth will receive a Cornell certificate and access to an alumni network of past students and mentors to support them as they rebuild their social networks.
