A partnership among Cascadilla Boat Club, Village at Ithaca and Cornell University
Committed to promoting rowing in the greater Ithaca community, Cascadilla Boat Club serves community members from a wide range of ages and financial backgrounds. Yet the racial and ethnic makeup of the club does not reflect the diversity of the Ithaca community. This is, at least in part, because rowing is seen as an elitist “white” sport, and boathouses are seen as bastions of privilege and exclusivity.
To expand opportunities for local youth, Cascadilla Boat Club and Village at Ithaca are partnering to offer a no-cost rowing program in July 2024. Cascadilla is providing the necessary rowing equipment and a coach to lead the on-water activities. Village at Ithaca is recruiting participants for the program, providing transportation to and from the boathouse and providing onsite staff to support the program. Cornell students are serving as assistant coaches.
Village at Ithaca is also leading a pre-program training session and post-program reflection, focused on intercultural competence and cultural humility, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
