The proximity of the United Nations Headquarters to New York City’s Roosevelt Island entices diplomats on missions from abroad to live on the island. As their children transfer to the local middle school, they often find it difficult to integrate with their American classmates.
Cornell Tech and the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association gallery are partnering to interview transfer students and curate an exhibit that raises awareness of and appreciation for their cultural practices. Demystifying Artifacts showcases interactive artifacts that physically capture a cultural theme, such as traditional attire, food, customs or family dynamics. Visitors can record reactions and questions that students then address in class or at community events.
