Support and inspiration for Ithaca Black youth in navigating their academic and career paths
Black Students United (BSU) serves as an umbrella organization and vital resource for the pan-African diaspora at Cornell. Through a new mentorship program, BSU members are sharing the student club’s support for Afro-centric values, academic excellence, activism and community-centered leadership with Ithaca’s Black youth. They are partnering with the historic Southside Community Center, which has long served as a gathering place and resource for the city’s African-American population.
Advised by Associate Dean of Students and Director of Black Student Empowerment Sharifa Wip, 15 to 20 undergraduates hope to empower their high school mentees to succeed in higher education and their future careers by offering a series of activities and workshops as well as visits to campus. The project also exposes the young participants to their own potential by showing them examples of Cornell students who were once in a similar position. Mentors may share their experiences and insights during BSU’s annual State of the Union event.
