Deepening community connections through collaborative, engaged projects
COML 3336: Border Environments is a regularly offered course with a long tradition of involving undergraduate and graduate students in community-engaged projects. With support from an Engaged Opportunity Grant, the spring 2025 course formalized local community connections in three projects led by community partners and students. “We are la voz” invited students to help artist Yen Ospina — president of the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County — curate an exhibition of fabric and fiber art by Latina artists in a downtown Ithaca gallery, with public talks and hands-on workshops. “The Art of Healing and Remembrance,” guided by Ana Ortiz of No Más Lágrimas, brought Ithaca’s diverse community together for cooking events that nourish body and soul through sharing food traditions. “Tech for Tomorrow” expanded its offerings, connecting engineering students with underserved residents at more sites to improve their technological literacy with tutoring in computer skills, job search basics, video calls and more.
