WordToRI sparks discussions about race, disability, data, technology and access on New York City’s Roosevelt Island and neighboring communities. The organization does this by connecting community members and academics to learn from one another, curating an oral history archive of local perspectives and producing films and other media. In fall 2018, WordToRI is producing a docu-series that chronicles the day-to-day experiences of residents as they deal with a rapidly changing social environment on the island, including the opening of Cornell Tech. The project also includes a panel discussion, “21st Century Media: How AI and Machine Learning are Changing the Way We Tell Stories about Race,” to facilitate discourse between academics studying these issues and the people who experience them.
