The city of St. Petersburg, Florida is committed to reducing poverty by 30 percent by 2020 — with an explicit emphasis on improving outcomes in black communities. Assistant professor Jamila Michener and three of her students will work with local organizations and community members to conduct an objective evaluation of the plan. The evaluation will provide actionable information about the effectiveness of the 2020 plan. In this project, students integrate their classroom learning with a real opportunity for civic engagement as they collect data, conduct background research, analyze legislative documents and media reports, and help interview community stakeholders.
