Community-engaged learning in the capstone course for Environment and Sustainability majors
In the new capstone course, Art, Ecology and the People of the Mohawk River, Environment and Sustainability students spend the semester learning about the ecology, geology and people’s history of the Mohawk River watershed in New York State. Through field trips, lectures and community engagement, the students gain an understanding of inequitable distribution of flood and drought vulnerability, explore traditional ecological knowledge and learn about water quality, restoration and riparian systems.
In collaboration with the Onondaga Environmental Institute, the Cornell students engage with local youth from Whitesboro and New York Mills to study stream health, restoration, climate change and land use. Students’ learned knowledge and experiences will be reflected through community-engaged art projects that are exhibited at local art venues located in cities along the river.
