Equipping regional K-12 teachers to integrate climate topics into curricula
K-12 educators in central New York want to integrate climate topics into their lesson plans in more impactful ways. However, lack of expertise and limited budgets and materials make that hard to do.
That’s why, in summer 2024, Toby Ault is partnering with the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) to facilitate an inaugural Climate Science Workshop for 20 regional educators. Building on climate engagement activities from Ault’s undergraduate course, the workshop will disseminate short video lectures and simulations along with the “World in a Tank” carbon dynamics project to teachers. The goal is to provide resources that participants can integrate into curricula and to develop relationships for future collaborations to meet the need for digestible climate education content.
Five undergraduate students who served as teaching assistants in Ault’s class will help facilitate the workshop, gaining valuable science communication experience. PRI will provide facilities, A/V equipment and project expertise to further their mission of advancing climate literacy in the community.
