Common Ground is a first-year writing seminar that brings together students from Cornell and the Ithaca City School District for a semester-long service learning experience. This collaboration allows Cornell students to become better integrated into the larger Ithaca community and help middle school and high school students through collaborative writing, tutoring and mentoring. The Cornell students are able to strengthen their writing skills by responding to readings about education equity and reforms in U.S. public education while working with students in local schools who are affected by national, state and local decisions regarding education issues. At the end of the semester, Boynton Middle School students visit the Cornell campus and, with their mentors, present joint research projects, an experience that demystifies the university for these young students.
