A partnership between the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs and the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) provides students with an opportunity to conduct research on federal policies and how they affect states and localities. Primary areas of focus include work and changing workforce policies, workforce participation and immigration. Students gain expert advice from the field in conducting research, and the connections they make help them extend their learning beyond academic experiences to include civic life, politics and government. The analysis that students conduct enables the GAO to review federal policies at state and local levels, which is often beyond its scope. Students have the opportunity to present their research with the GAO at the Association of American Geographers conference and poster session.
