Faculty and students in Near Eastern Studies (NES) offer two interrelated opportunities to engage with K-12 educators and students in Ithaca, and in Tompkins, Seneca and Tioga counties — a teaching training porgram and a service-learning project.
In 2017-18 and 2018-19, NES piloted two six-session teacher training programs in conjunction with TST BOCES to introduce topics and materials about the Modern Middle East. This grant supported the development of a sustainable training module to be offered beginning in 2020-21. Sessions are led by Cornell faculty and advanced graduate students, and co-facilitated by Near Eastern Studies students.
For the service-learning project, Cornell undergraduates enrolled in NES4560: Theory and Method in NES in Spring 2020 and 2021 partnered with 10th and 11th graders in Global Studies at the Lehman Alternative Community School to help them prepare for the annual Middle East Debates.
