In the course Prison Theatre and the Possibilities of Transformation, students study the history and effects of incarceration and how organizations are using the arts in prison to remediate trauma, and prepare men and women for their eventual return home. The heart of the class is the weekly sessions the students participate in with the members of the Phoenix Players Theatre Group at Auburn Correctional Facility.
This grant supports documenting the course through short films representing each student. A website will be created to host the films. Linking to the PPTG website and the Prison Arts Coalition listserv will put the course in conversation with over 350 individuals and organizations utilizing the arts to address the trauma of incarceration.
