Collaboratively creating the scenic design for a new play exploring the impacts of the criminal justice system on families
Civic Ensemble’s ReEntry Theatre Program creates original theater that highlights and investigates the complexity of real human stories. It is a supportive, creative community for people who have experienced incarceration or court involvement, and aims to raise awareness about and shift the narrative around the realities of the criminal justice system and the people involved.
The program is developing a new play exploring the impacts of the criminal justice system on families. People who have had a loved one impacted by the system are also joining the development team and ensemble of actors. Their goal is to tell a story that represents the healing journeys of families who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice system, modeling the possibility of connection, support and belonging that can build despite challenging circumstances being system-impacted.
Jason Simms and undergraduate Performing and Media Arts (PMA) students are partnering with Civic Ensemble to design scenic elements for the play, which will also be made available via streaming to PMA students, to support further engagement. The project includes a site visit to the Ithaca venue, virtual meetings with the production team, research for design proposals and drafting and finalizing the scenic design.
