New York state law requires animal shelters in natural disaster areas to accommodate pets, but training opportunities are often too expensive for small organizations with tight budgets. Through this workshop, Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program and the ASPCA are providing local shelters with the training to prepare their staffs for natural disasters, including how to respond quickly, successfully care for community animals and prepare for recovery. Veterinary students also attend, gaining disaster preparedness training and hands-on experience working with multiple agencies within the community. The workshop also builds lines of communication between shelters and organizations like the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response, which has guidelines for how to accommodate people seeking shelter with their pets during disasters.
