The Cornell Climate-Adaptive Design (CAD) studio connects students with climate-threatened communities in the Hudson Valley. Each semester, teams of design students partner with municipalities and a variety of stakeholders to develop design strategies that inspire community awareness and capacity for more climate-resilient waterfronts and their communities. When it launched, CAD studio development focused on ecological and physical aspects of resilience, but it has grown to also include social aspects of resilience. At the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture Conference researcher Graham Smith MLA ’17 and associate professor Joshua Cerra will discuss their work with program partner Libby Zemaitis, climate outreach specialist at the New York State Department of Conservation, incorporating theoretical concepts of social resilience into CAD studio engagement, design research and pedagogy.
