Raising awareness to prevent tick-borne diseases in Tompkins County
Tick-borne diseases are a major health concern in New York, with the state reporting the highest number of cases in the United States (33,939 cases as of June 2024). Some counties, like Tompkins County, have seen a surge in cases, highlighting the need for a community-level approach. To effectively address this issue, understanding public perception, knowledge and preventive behaviors towards tick-borne diseases is crucial.
To improve community health, students in Jamal Uddin’s COMM 3760: Planning Communication Campaign course are partnering with the Tompkins County Whole Health Department. They have developed a campaign proposal based on a population survey. This proposal evolved into a practical health campaign project to raise awareness of tick-borne diseases in Tompkins County during the summer of 2024.
